Edvarda is the first artist to have focused on the female characters in three of the world’s most famous literary masterpieces; “Crime and Punishment”, “The Idiot”, and “The Brothers Karamazov” by Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. While borrowing the aesthetics of today’s cover girls, and utilizing contemporary Russian supermodels and fashion design, these portraits also appear as ideals of intellect and integrity, referring to their historical position as women with no rights, in a society where shame and honor defined their destinies.
In the Dostoyevsky Fine Art Prints, reminiscent of glamorous posters from the golden age of Hollywood, we are nevertheless confronted with complex, contemporary female characters. The repertoire of emotional radiance expressed in these women is experienced through a decidedly contemporary point of view. Our familiarity with film, fashion and advertising provides the framework for our imagination, revealing these women’s vulnerability, sensuality, and strength of character.
The juxtaposition of past and present, of the classical iconography mixed with the superficiality of consumerist culture, allow these portraits to glow with depth and the power of feminism. They are truly heroines.
Print method
Fine Art Print is a specialized reproduction technique, utilizing state-of- the-art digital technology to translate paintings to prints. The process is highly sophisticated, and allows for near-perfect conversions of the original artwork. Shadows and reflections are minimized to avoid interfering with the tonal gradations, while the structure and other textural elements on the original surface is reinterpreted with an innovate set of lighting tools.
The digital processing is done in close cooperation with the artist, ensuring that the photographic rendering is as close to the original image and intent as possible. The process involves breaking the image into smaller units, which in turn are subjected to refinements like retouching, color, sharpness, contrast, definition, etc. Lastly, the entire image is balanced, and the original art is transformed into an equally artful reproduction.
For the “Dostoyevsky Heroines”, X-Rite Eye One Pro IO is used to measure color, make profiles and optimize the quality for the paper. The artwork is then printed on a 12-color Canon Imageprograf ipf8300, with an enlarged color space suited for these motives. We have used Canson Infinity BFK Rives, hand made at the Arches factory in France.
The Lucia pigmented ink used for these prints is fade-resistant, and offers a wide variety of available options in terms of textures and finishes, whether for matte different fine art print paper, watercolor paper, cotton canvas, etc. According to the Vilhelm Institute (USA), this combination of ink and paper has a color fastness that will last for 150 to 200 years, if kept away from direct sunlight and other UV radiation, and displayed in stable temperature and humidity conditions.
